"How to Look at Mexican Highways" by Monica de la Torre

I chose this poem because she really speaks to me about life. She speaks harshly, but once you think about her words they are all true.  She states, "You are not going anywhere, no one is waiting for you." You cannot always depend on people to be there for you all the time. You have to do things for yourself every once in a while. She is foreign but speaks from the heart.

  1. I think this poem is interesting in several ways. It's set up as an outline. I wonder why. It comes off as if giving directions to the reader, but it's obviously personal when it speaks of loneliness and desire. It paints a picture of an impoverished area, but in a loving way. I feel like I could read it a few times and discover something new each time.

  4. You are right, she did speak very harshly. But I think it is so that she can get her point across and that is a line that is true to every. You cannot count on someone always being there for you.
